There are two kinds of grants available for low income families in this category. They are:
Canada Access Grant for Students from Low-income Families
This Canadian government grant is for students enrolled for the first time in post-secondary education; the program has to be at least two years long that leads to a certificate, diploma or degree. It covers half of your tuition cost, up to a maximum of $3,000.
How do I Qualify for Canada Access Grant?
You may qualify for the Canada Access Grant if you:
- are pursuing post-secondary education within four years of leaving secondary school;
- are enrolled as a full-time student;
- are eligible for a full-time Canada Student Loan;
- are enrolled for the first time in post-secondary education & in your first year of studies;
- are in a program of studies of at least two years that leads to a certificate, diploma or degree at a designated educational institution;
- are entitled to receive National Child Benefit Supplement or would be entitled to if you were less than 18 years of age;
- are a person to whom a special allowance under the Children's Special Allowance Act is payable or would be payable if you were less than 18 years of age.
How can I Apply for Canada Access Grant?
When you apply for a full-time student loan, your eligibility for this Canadian government grant will be automatically considered.
Canada Study Grant for High-need part-time students
For part-time students, they can apply for the Canada Study Grant if their financial needs surpasses their established loan amounts. The Canada Study Grants are considered taxable income, but don't have to be repaid.
How do I Qualify for Canada Study Grant?
The qualification criteria for Canada Study Grant are:
- be eligible for a part-time Canada Student Loan;
- have a valid reason why you have to study part-time, instead of full-time;
- your gross family income is below established amounts;
- other criteria may apply

You'll be considered for the Canada Study Grant when your student loan application is processed.
